Our Products Are Cosmetics

S & J Soaps products are marketed as cosmetics under U.S. FDA regulations. We do not make claims to treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Our descriptions focus on how our soaps may leave skin feeling and looking — cleansing, softening, moisturizing, and refreshing — using only cosmetic language.

Cosmetic Descriptors Only

We use words like cleansing, softening, moisturizing, soothing, toning, brightening, and conditioning to describe our soaps. We do not use drug claims such as “heals,” “treats,” “cures,” “prevents,” or “antibacterial” as product claims.

Ingredient Disclosure

Each product’s full ingredient list is shown in the Ingredients tab on the product page, listed in descending order of predominance using INCI names, in line with FDA cosmetic labeling guidelines. All essential oils are listed individually by their INCI names.

Clean Ingredients Commitment

All S & J Soaps products are:

  • Palm oil-free soap bases
  • SLS-free and SLES-free
  • Scented exclusively with pure essential oils — no synthetic fragrance oils
  • Colored with cosmetic-grade mica pigments only — no FD&C dyes
  • Produced in small batches with full batch records maintained

Ingredient Safety

We follow established essential oil safety guidelines for all products:

  • Phototoxic oils (Bergamot, Lemon, Lime) are used in rinse-off formulations only, where safe dilution mitigates risk
  • Products suitable for children ages 2+ or 6+ are individually labeled based on essential oil content
  • Usage rates are maintained at 1–3% of soap weight, well within cosmetic safety guidelines

Facility registration under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) may apply; we are actively monitoring our obligations.
